Sandtray Therapy

Sandtray therapy is a form of expressive therapy for both children and adults. Play is the first way that we learn about ourselves and our place in the world. Sandtray therapy is good for self reflection and emotional release, making it a great treatment modality for relationship conflict, trauma, and anxiety.

Sandtray therapy sessions begin with choosing from one or more of the different trays filled with different types of sand to create your tray. You’ll have a wide variety of miniatures displayed in my office for you to select from.

Then it’s time for you to create trays with the items based on what’s happening in your life. If you’d prefer, I can also provide you with a related sentence prompt to help as you’re making a sandtray to represent a certain situation.

You’ll use the miniatures literally or symbolically to then depict and describe the impact of situations, people, and emotions on you. You might decide to use the sandtray throughout your entire visit. Or, you might just prefer it occasionally, whenever it’s hard for you to find all of the words to describe a particular relationship or life experience.

You’ll benefit either way because sandtray work offers another way to “talk though issues” and experience aha moments. A deeper understanding about the layers and the emotional complexity behind more painful experiences often happens from creating your sand tray worlds

Once the full impact of an experience is uncovered and then processed during sandtray work, there’s increased opportunity for you to have emotional resolution.

Afterwards, people often describe feeling less emotionally stuck. When experiences feel less intense, you’ll be able to reclaim the energy and brain power needed to thrive in life instead of just going through the motions.
